We stayed two nights there in Nov. 2012. Staffs were nice and helpful. Clean and spacious room, clean bed sheet and towels. Very convenient location, right along the Sunday market. At first we couldn't find Sparrow Nest, because it's behind Villa Duang Champa (a much more expensive hotel) and had only a small board showed 'Sparrow Nest'. It shared the front desk with Villa Duang Champa, so the good point is you can use the decent lobby and garden of Villa Duang Champa for free. ( But after seeing the decent lobby you might feel a little disappointed when you find the Sparrow Nest room in the backyard.) The wifi didn't work at first, but was fixed after we told the staff at the front desk.
Shower was not hot enough. And the bed was a bit hard.. Another guest house we stayed cost much less had better shower and bed. The room of Sparrow Nest was nicer, but I felt what I needed more were a hotter shower and a better mattress.
We really loved this place. It was excellent value for money, spotlessly clean, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I know staff are often friendly in Thailand, but these folk really were lovely. While the guesthouse is quite basic, there are a few nice touches like super soft bed sheets, and a very cute cabinet for stashing clothes etc. It is very conveniently located just behind the Duang Champa Hotel (same owners) -- the hotel is where to go for checkin, and anything you need from the staff. The Hotel is a beautifully redecorated old Lanna house, and is very charming. The small courtyard is very cute, and they do some delicious food (plus huge glasses of wine for an excellent price!). If the Duang Champa Hotel had been in our budget we would also have been very happy staying there. The location is also excellent, and in a lovely part of town close to everything. For a cheap and cheerful breakfast, try 'F. Full' cafe diagonally across the road from Duang Champa Hotel (straight across from Lila Massage). The very sweet owner makes tasty coffee, shakes and great breakfast. We also really liked Pacamara Cafe (just a couple of doors down from the hotel) with their very tasty coffees (though, with the exception of a guy who looked to be the owner, the staff were quite lacklustre). All in all, a great budget option!!
It would be great to see the breakfast menu at the hotel expand. Even just including some fresh fruit or muesli and yoghurt on the menu would be a step up. Food was tasty, but options very limited. We opted to eat breakfast elsewhere most days.
The staff were very accommodating and friendly and the room was clean.
I felt that for what you got, the place was extremely over priced. Even though there garden was nice, as reviews suggested this did not make up for the tiny room. You can stay in places as peaceful and pleasant looking but which also have air conditioning, en suite toilet and bathroom for the same price. Also, one of the bathrooms did not close properly and the lock on my room was faulty - easy to open without a key.
